Hey, I’m Ryan.
I founded Financial Residency after seeing a major gap in the financial world. Physicians spend years becoming experts in medicine, yet very little of that training prepares them for the financial decisions that come with a medical career.
As the spouse of a physician, I’ve experienced that firsthand.
I’ve seen the years of training, the student debt, the long hours, the relatively low income during residency, and then the dramatic financial transition that happens when a physician becomes an attending.
I’ve also seen how overwhelming it can be to make major financial decisions at the same time you’re starting a new career, relocating to a new city, and trying to figure out where you want to live.
Buying a home is often one of the first major decisions in that transition.
That’s why we want physicians to understand their mortgage options before they start shopping for a house.
Why Physician Loans Are Worth Exploring
A physician mortgage isn’t automatically the right choice for everyone. But for many doctors, residents, fellows, and other eligible medical professionals, it’s an option worth understanding.
Depending on the lender and your individual circumstances, physician mortgage programs may offer different approaches to down payments, student loan debt, income history, and other qualification requirements.
That can be particularly valuable for physicians who are:
- Still in residency or fellowship
- Starting their first attending position
- Relocating for a new job
- Carrying significant medical school debt
- Building their savings after years of training
- Purchasing a higher-value home
- Looking for an alternative to a traditional 20% down payment
The important thing is not simply getting approved for a mortgage.
It’s understanding your options so you can make a home purchase that fits into your larger financial plan.

Why Financial Residency Exists
During graduate school, I realized that much of the financial industry was built around selling products rather than helping people understand the decisions they were making.
That experience led me to fee-only financial planning, where the focus is on putting the client’s interests first and providing advice without relying on product commissions.
It also reinforced something I’ve believed ever since:
People make better financial decisions when they understand their options.
That’s the philosophy behind Financial Residency.
We aren’t here to tell every physician that they should buy a house, use a physician mortgage, invest a certain way, or follow one particular financial strategy.
We’re here to help physicians understand the decisions they’re facing so they can make informed choices.
Financial Residency
Financial Residency is a physician-focused financial education platform and podcast reaching hundreds of thousands of physicians and healthcare professionals each month.
Our content covers the financial decisions that matter throughout a medical career, including physician mortgages, home buying, student loans, investing, taxes, retirement planning, insurance, real estate, and financial independence.
But homeownership is one area where we see physicians consistently have questions.
Can I buy during residency?
Will my student loans prevent me from qualifying?
How much should I put down?
Should I wait until I’m an attending?
What happens if I’m moving for a new job?
Is a physician loan actually better for me?
There isn’t one answer that applies to every physician.
That’s why we encourage you to understand your options before making one of the largest financial decisions of your life.
